The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has opened a request for information about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in seafood. Comments can be submitted until February 18, 2025.

FDA is seeking scientific data and information from industry, academia, government agencies, and others about PFAS concentrations in seafood, the surrounding environment, and processing water, as well as mitigation strategies for reducing exposure to PFAS in seafood.

FDA’s most recent Total Diet Study (TDS) testing indicates that seafood may be at higher risk for environmental PFAS contamination than other food types. In 2021 and 2022, to expand on results from TDS samples and to evaluate potential exposure to PFAS from an expanded variety of seafood types, FDA collected additional seafood samples and conducted surveys targeting the most commonly consumed seafood in the U.S. However, the data on PFAS in seafood are still limited for many other seafood types.

Data gathered through the request for information will help address data gaps around PFAS in seafood and inform FDA’s approach to addressing contamination.
