Congress to Hold Legislative Hearing on 28 Active Bills Related to Food Safety, FDA

On April 29, the U.S. House Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing to discuss 28 pieces of legislation currently sitting before Congress on issues related to food safety regulatory oversight and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The bills to be discussed have been introduced by a range of legislators spanning the political aisle, and address issues like “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) determinations, food chemical safety reassessments, food labeling, infant formula and baby food safety, information-sharing between federal and state agencies, and additional FDA authorities for human foods oversight. Several pieces of legislation have been introduced in previous years.
Specifically, the bills that will be discussed at the Subcommittee on Health hearing, titled, Healthier America: Legislative Proposals on the Regulation and Oversight of Food, are:

- HR 8412, No False Formula Act (Rep. Jacobs)
- HR 8432, To provide FDA the needed authorities to carry out its regulatory mission with respect to human foods, to provide additional resources and authorities with respect to human foods research, and for other purposes. (Rep. DeGette).
The hearing was called by Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Congressman Morgan Griffith (VA-09), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Health. “FDA is playing a key role in cracking down on the chronic disease epidemic, and we look forward to working together to help make Americans healthier,” said Reps. Guthrie and Griffith.
The hearing will take place at 2:00 P.M. ET on April 29 and will be livestreamed at energycommerce.house.gov.
