KEYWORDS: chemicals / compliance / EU / food contact materials (FCMs) / packaging / PFAS / sustainability
6/16/26 11:00 am to 6/16/27 EDT
Contact: Vania Halabou

This webinar will examine the shift toward more sustainable food contact materials and the need to comply with evolving EU regulations. Following an overview of food contact legislation, the session will address recent sustainability-driven regulations, including the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), and the analytical testing required to support compliance. The discussion will focus on non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

From this webinar, attendees will learn:

  • How sustainability is shaping food contact material requirements
  • Key elements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation
  • Risks associated with non-intentionally added substances
  • Considerations for PFAS substances in food contact materials

Speaker:

Malcolm Driffield, Ph.D., Senior Managing Scientist—Head of Food (UK/EU), Exponent International. Malcolm Driffield, Ph.D., has over 25 years of experience in the field of analytical chemistry, providing advice and guidance on the analytical techniques used to investigate problems across a number of commodities and industries including food and beverage, packaging, and food-contact materials. During his 17 years at a UK government laboratory, he gained widespread experience in analytical methodologies used for the determination of chemical contaminants in foods and food-contact materials, including an extensive knowledge of non-targeted analysis techniques used for the determination of non-intentionally added substances. In November 2018, Dr. Driffield joined the Chemical Regulation and Food Safety Team at Exponent International, a multi-disciplinary engineering and scientific consulting firm, and now specializes in technical and regulatory problem-solving for regulatory compliance issues, guidance on analytical techniques used to investigate problems, and interpretation of information-rich datasets determined by modern analytical techniques.
