The recall was issued after a total of 14 people across 12 states fell ill from contracting Salmonella Seftenberg. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the first reported case of the outbreak began on February 17, 2022, and the onset of the latest case occurred on May 1, 2022. Case patients range from under one year old to 85 years in age. No deaths and two hospitalizations have been reported so far.

Of the total case patients, 80 percent reported consuming various types of Jif peanut butter products before becoming sick. Whole genome sequencing analysis identified that the samples of Salmonella taken from case patients are genetically similar to a Salmonella sample collected in 2010 from J.M. Smucker Co.’s production facility in Lexington, Kentucky. FDA and CDC investigations regarding potentially contaminated Jif products and the Salmonella Seftenberg outbreak are ongoing.

Update, May 26, 2022: FDA has posted a list of additional recalls being conducted by companies that have used the recalled Jif peanut butter as an ingredient in the manufacturing of a new product or in repackaging the product. This list will be updated as the agency receives notification of new recalls.

CDC also reports that of the ten people interviewed in the outbreak investigation, ten confirmed that they had eaten peanut butter prior to becoming ill. Nine of the the interviewees specifically reported eating different varieties of Jif brand peanut butter.
