bioMérieux Launches Rapid PCR Test for Probiotic Species Verification in Dietary Supplements

bioMérieux has launched GENE-UP Probiotic Species ID, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based testing solution designed to verify probiotic species in dietary supplements. According to the company, the assay enables species-level identification in 90 minutes or less, providing manufacturers and contract laboratories with an in-house alternative to traditional testing workflows.
GENE-UP Probiotic Species ID is the latest addition to bioMérieux’s xPRO Program, which supports collaborative development of molecular diagnostic assays for food quality and safety applications. The product is now available in the U.S., ahead of a global rollout.
Developed to Meet Supplement Industry Need
The company said the solution was developed in collaboration with dietary supplement manufacturer NOW, which sought a faster approach to verifying probiotic species in multi-strain formulations. NOW previously relied on third-party reference laboratories for probiotic species identification, which the company said created delays in production release and increased operational costs.
Designed for Species-Level Probiotic Verification
According to bioMérieux, GENE-UP Probiotic Species ID identifies 18 commonly used probiotic species in capsule and powder formulations, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium lactis. The company said the assay is intended to support verification of dietary supplement label claims while reducing the time and complexity associated with conventional species identification methods.
Applications for Third-Party Testing Laboratories
bioMérieux said the assay is also being adopted by third-party reference laboratories as a complementary tool to sequencing and high-throughput screening. According to the company, the standardized PCR-based approach can help laboratories manage increasing testing volumes while reserving sequencing resources for more complex analyses.
