NOW, LeafWorks Advance Identity Verification Testing for Botanical Ingredients

Natural products manufacturer NOW announced a partnership with plant genomics company LeafWorks to incorporate next-generation DNA sequencing into its botanical identity testing program.
The collaboration integrates LeafWorks' DNA Analysis Platform into NOW's quality testing workflow, enabling genomic analysis of botanical ingredients using a curated reference database and analytical systems designed for complex botanical products. NOW said the technology will enhance its ability to verify botanical identity across more than 2,000 ingredients and multi-ingredient formulations.
As part of the partnership, NOW established a next-generation sequencing laboratory at its Sparks, Nevada, facility. DNA sequence data generated in-house is analyzed through LeafWorks' platform to support species verification and produce Certificates of Analysis for botanical ingredients.
LeafWorks said its platform was developed to address limitations of earlier DNA barcoding methods by using species-targeted genomic approaches, authenticated reference materials, and analytical systems designed specifically for commercial botanical products. The company said the platform enables simultaneous identification of multiple species and scalable analysis of high sample volumes.
The companies said the partnership represents a new model for botanical identity testing by combining in-house DNA sequencing with external bioinformatics analysis to support quality assurance for botanical products.
