Michigan State University’s Institute for Food Laws and Regulations (IFLR) recently announced the launch of a new Master of Science in Food Regulatory Affairs, a timely online program designed to address a critical knowledge gap in the food industry.

With nearly three decades of experience delivering high-quality, online food law education, IFLR developed this program in response to a need among food industry professionals. While many professionals have backgrounds in food science, few possess advanced training in the laws and regulations that govern the global food supply. The new degree program provides the education and credentials to prepare them for regulatory leadership roles.

“This program equips professionals with the specialized knowledge and skills required to navigate the complex and evolving U.S. and global food regulatory landscape,” said Neal Fortin, Program Director at IFLR.

About the Program

The Master of Science in Food Regulatory Affairs is a fully online, asynchronous program tailored for working professionals around the world. Students complete 10 courses, including five required courses in:

  • Introduction to Food Safety and Professional Development
  • International Food Laws and Regulations
  • Food Laws and Regulations in the United States
  • Regulatory Leadership in Food Law
  • Capstone Applied Project in Food Regulatory Affairs

Students also choose from a wide selection of electives on specialized topics such as food regulation in the European Union, Canada, China, Codex Alimentarius, Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) rules, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) law, and international trade.

Who Should Apply

The program is ideal for early to mid-career professionals working in regulatory affairs, quality assurance, food safety, product development, or policy. Students will gain the ability to:

  • Understand domestic and international food laws
  • Evaluate regulatory proposals and compliance requirements
  • Communicate effectively with regulators, lawmakers, and stakeholders
  • Apply legal knowledge to support strategic business decisions in global markets

Flexible and Career-Focused

The curriculum is designed for full-time professionals, with most students taking one or two courses per semester and completing the degree in approximately three years, depending on the student's preferred course load.

This new degree builds on IFLR’s long-standing reputation as a global leader in food law education and reflects Michigan State University’s continued commitment to innovation and professional development in the agri-food sector.
