Cortec Introduces PFAS-Free, Recyclable Greaseproof Barrier for Packaging

Cortec has expanded its barrier paper portfolio with the introduction of EcoBio Barrier Paper, a recyclable, repulpable, and biodegradable option designed to support circular economy principles in packaging.

Product Composition and Environmental Profile

EcoBio™ Barrier Paper is manufactured from 100 percent recycled paper stock and coated with a biobased barrier layer containing 90–100 percent renewable organic carbon, as verified by ASTM D6866. The coating is also biodegradable per OECD 301 standards. Unlike conventional barrier packaging materials that incorporate polyethylene or foil, EcoBio Barrier Paper contains no intentionally added plastics, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or fluorochemicals, facilitating compatibility with standard paper recycling streams and enhancing end-of-life disposal options.

Functional Applications

The product is engineered for short-term packaging scenarios where moisture and grease resistance are required. Key performance attributes include:

  • Moisture barrier to reduce ingress or egress
  • Resistance to grease and oil penetration
  • Preservation of packaging integrity under variable environmental conditions.

EcoBio Barrier Paper is suitable for wrapping items exposed to fluctuating humidity or weather during transit. It can also be used as linerboard in wooden crates or cardboard boxes to prevent moisture absorption and protect contents from contact with damp surfaces. Additionally, it serves as a barrier to prevent oil or grease from leaching out of packages, such as those containing lightly oiled metal components.

End-of-Life Considerations

The biodegradable and biobased coating offers potential for expanded disposal options, subject to local waste management regulations. This feature may support broader sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on plastic-based packaging and minimizing landfill contributions.

Grease contamination may interfere with sustainable disposal options, dependent on local regulations.
