Foreign Material, Undeclared Allergens Caused Most USDA Food Recalls in 2025

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) has published data on the recalls of regulated products that occurred in 2025.
Between January and December, 42 recalls totaling 71,420,721 pounds (lbs.) of product were issued. The majority (38 recalls totaling more than 71,000,000 lbs. of product) were Class I recalls, indicating a reasonable probability that the recalled product could cause serious health consequences.
The presence of foreign material was the leading cause of recalls (13), followed by undeclared allergens (nine), production without inspection (seven), import violation (five), Listeria monocytogenes contamination (four), the use of an unapproved substance (two), Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) contamination (one), and misbranding (one).
The greatest number of recalls involved swine products (11), followed by products of mixed origin (ten), chicken (nine), beef (seven), Siluriformes (catfish, three), turkey (one), and sheep/lamb (one).
