Island of Jersey Considering Modernized Food Regulations

The States of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency and the largest of the Channel Islands, is considering new regulations to modernize its food laws and strengthen consumer and public health protections.

The Draft Food (Jersey) Regulations 202- propose:

  • Mandatory allergen labeling
  • A licensing scheme for food businesses
  • Update food hygiene rules in alignment with the UK and EU.

The licensing scheme would replace the current system, and would require:

  • Food businesses to hold an annual license
  • Categorization of businesses as low-risk, medium-risk, or high-risk based on food type, handling, and customer base
  • Fees charged according to risk level (with exemptions for some organizations); the Minister for the Environment intends to introduce a more detailed fee proposal.

The Jersey Environment, Housing, and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel is slated to debate the draft regulations on February 2026. An anonymous survey for stakeholder feedback is open until January 30.
