USDA-FSIS Announces Dr. Justin Ransom as New Administrator

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) has announced Dr. Justin Ransom as its new Administrator. The previous Administrator, Dr. Denise Eblen, who served in the role in December 2024, will remain in the Office of the Administrator as Deputy Administrator.

USDA Extends H5N1 Testing in Dairy Cattle; EU Releases Guidance on Avian Flu Prevention

USDA-FSIS released a notice in late June that it plans to extend its H5N1 Influenza A Dairy Cow Testing Program until September 30. Meanwhile, the EU released a new guidance document on preparedness, prevention, and response for avian flu in animals and food.

USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) sampled and tested meat, chicken, and Siluriformes fish (catfish) for 16 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), detecting “forever chemicals” in less than 0.2–0.3 percent of all sample types except wild-caught catfish, of which nearly half contained at least one PFAS.

USDA Withdraws Proposed Regulatory Framework for Salmonella in Poultry After Years of Development
