USDA-NIFA Awards $24 Million in Food Safety Research Grants

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced that 35 research projects have been selected for funding totaling nearly $24 million to improve food safety by helping control microbial and chemical contamination in various foods.

Ag Secretary Touts Recent USDA Innovations, Including Fruit Spoilage Prevention Packet

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced a new report on scientific breakthroughs discovered by USDA researchers that led to new patents and inventions with the potential for commercial application and potential economic growth. Among those breakthroughs are antimicrobial packets that keep food from spoiling and flour made out of chardonnay grape seeds that prevents weight gain.

FSIS Issues Guidance on Controlling Listeria in Retail Delis

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) yesterday published a guidance document to aid retail delicatessens in controlling Listeria monocytogenes. The agency is soliciting public comments on the guidance through June 20, 2014.

Twitter Grant Winners Include Harvard Foodborne Illness Researchers

April 18, 2014
The social networking platform Twitter has announced the winners of its inaugural data grants program, which will give selected research institutions access to the entire history of tweets related to their research topics. One of the six institutions, Harvard Medical School (in conjunction with Boston Children's Hospital), plans to use the Twitter data to study foodborne illness.
