Fortress Introduces Integrated X-Ray and Checkweigher Combo System

Fortress Technology has introduced the Icon X-ray and Checkweigher Combination System, which integrates product inspection and weighing within a single IP65-rated stainless steel frame. The system was designed to reduce equipment footprint and floor contact points while supporting hygienic food production.
The Icon system uses algorithms to detect foreign materials including metal, glass, plastics, and bone while simultaneously verifying package weight, fill levels, and missing components. Four belt widths are available for applications including dairy, meat, and baked goods.
Radiation is fully contained within the system, eliminating the need for external lead shielding. A unified human-machine interface (HMI) manages system functions, and an optional camera system enables real-time product flow monitoring. Separate reject bins are intended to minimize product waste and maintain quality control data.
The system also features Fortress Technology's IA+ filtering technology, which was designed to distinguish contaminant signatures from product edges, air pockets, and overlapping components in complex products. Reject systems can be configured for different product formats, including air blast systems for lightweight products and drop-nose or retractable conveyors for larger or delicate products. Metal detection can also be integrated into the same frame.
According to Fortress Technology, the Icon system uses a passive-cooling X-ray generator intended to reduce maintenance requirements. An adaptation of the company's Automatic Testing technology is also available and can be configured for specific product weights and formats to verify the rejection of products indicating a contamination event.
For data management and system oversight, OPC UA and Ethernet connectivity enable data logging and remote monitoring. RFID access controls are also available to restrict access to sensitive parameters and audit information.
