FDA to Hold Public Expert Panel Discussion on Food Allergies

On Monday October 10, from 10 A.M.–12:00 P.M. ET, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold an Expert Panel on Food Allergies, which will be livestreamed on YouTube. The session is also open for in-person attendance, but space is limited and registration is required.

FDA Expert Panels are roundtable discussions with independent panels of scientific experts that will review the latest scientific evidence, evaluate potential health risks, explore alternatives, and offer recommendations for regulatory action.

The FDA Expert Panel on Food Allergies will facilitate discussions on the etiology and best treatments for food allergies as well as current health guidelines.

Confirmed panelists include FDA Commissioner Marty A. Makary, M.D., M.P.H., and FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods, Kyle Diamantas, J.D. Additional panelists will be announced closer to the day of the event.

The expert panel discussion will take place at the FDA’s White Oak Campus in Silver Spring, Maryland. The public and members of the media may attend the event.

FDA Opens Registration for Public Meeting on Food Allergen Thresholds

FDA has also opened registration for its previously announced Virtual Public Meeting and Listening Session on Food Allergen Thresholds and Their Potential Applications. The three-day public meeting will feature presentations and panel discussions by invited speakers on November 18, followed by listening sessions on November 19–20.

FDA is hosting the public meeting in light of recent scientific developments on allergen thresholds that have prompted FDA to explore how allergen thresholds can improve food safety, enhance labeling practices, and help consumers make more informed choices.

Input received during the public meeting will help FDA determine next steps, establish priorities, and develop food allergen threshold approaches that benefit public health.
