AI-Powered App Helps Food-Allergic Consumers Make Food Safety Decisions

SnackSafe has launched SnackPro, an AI-powered mobile app designed to help consumers identify potential allergens and dietary concerns in packaged foods, restaurant meals, and homemade dishes using image analysis technology.
The app was developed by SnackSafe founder Allon Mason after his daughter experienced multiple severe allergic reactions. Food allergies affect an estimated 33 million Americans, including approximately one in 13 children, according to Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE).
Users can upload information about allergens or ingredients they must avoid and then scan foods using the app. SnackPro analyzes the image and returns one of three results: “contains,” “doesn’t appear to contain,” or “may contain” allergens. Results are personalized to individual users.
SnackPro Details
SnackPro is intended to help users identify common allergens, including peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, eggs, soy, shellfish, sesame, and gluten. The app also flags certain dietary and nutrition-related concerns, such as high sugar or sodium content, saturated fat, vegan compatibility, kosher status, and halal compatibility.
According to SnackSafe, key features include:
- Food label scanning in more than 40 languages
- An in-app allergy card that can be shown to restaurant staff or caregivers in the local language
- Shareable scan history for families and caregivers
- Voice-enabled allergen input intended for children and non-readers
- Custom bilingual allergy posters for schools and childcare settings, planned for a future release
The app was designed to simplify food safety decisions during situations where families may need to make quick judgments about unfamiliar foods.
SnackPro is available through the Apple App Store. It is free to download and includes 30 complimentary scans. After the free scans are used, subscriptions begin at $5.99 per month, with additional scan packages available for purchase in the app.
SnackSafe also said it plans to donate 10 percent of profits to food allergy organizations.
