Using AI Responsibly in Food Safety Management Systems

KEYWORDS: artificial intelligence / food safety management system / SSOPs
7/21/26 2:00 pm to 7/21/27 EDT
Contact: Vania Halabou

This webinar will provide participants with guidance on how to effectively use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools to develop key components of a food safety management system (FSMS), including standard operating procedures (SOPs), policies, training materials, and system verification activities.

Abigail Snyder, Ph.D., and Calvin Slaughter, Ph.D. candidate at Cornell University, will address the responsible and ethical use of generative AI and how these tools can improve efficiency, standardization, and accessibility while maintaining ethical standards in food safety.

From this webinar, attendees will learn:

  • Where generative AI fits within the broader field of AI
  • How generative AI can aid in developing specific FSMS materials and documents
  • How various technical approaches to generative AI can enhance document security, quality, and consistency
  • Ethical uses of generative AI to integrate these tools safely and responsibly into documentation workflows

Speakers:

Abigail Snyder, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Food Science, Cornell University. Abby Snyder, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in Food Science at Cornell University. She develops schema that make food safety data more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) for both humans and machines. Specific areas of focus have included data associated with environmental monitoring, hygiene status assessments, and sanitation. At Cornell, her lab focuses on the development of scientifically valid intervention strategies that improve food safety and microbial quality, including mitigating cross-contamination and enabling targeted recognition of microbial spoilage potential and persistence.

Calvin Slaughter, Ph.D. Candidate, Food Science, Cornell University. Calvin Slaughter is a food safety Ph.D. Candidate at Cornell University researching sanitation, environmental control, statistical modeling, and data-driven decision-making in food safety. His work examines how computational models can be used to improve understanding of consumer behaviors, identify risks, and develop more effective interventions. His extension efforts largely focus on reducing barriers to the adaptation and use of these tools and methods by food manufacturers.
