FSANZ Releases 2030 Roadmap Outlining Priority Food Standards Proposals

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has published its 2030 Roadmap, which outlines the agency’s plans for food standards proposals over the next five years.
Endorsed by food ministers in November 2025, the roadmap is intended to improve transparency, predictability, and coordination across the food regulatory system. It was developed in collaboration with regulatory partners and stakeholders and aligns with the Food Regulation System Strategic Plan 2025–2028.
FSANZ said proposals are central to ensuring that the Food Standards Code remains fit-for-purpose, supporting food safety and public health while enabling industry innovation.
Priority Areas Through 2030
The 2030 Roadmap distributes work across four strategic outcomes: safe and suitable food, a healthy food supply, informed and empowered consumers, and thriving food economies. Identified priority work areas spanning the strategic outcomes include:
- Safe and suitable food: Modernizing standards for formulated supplementary sports foods
- A healthy food supply: Reviewing requirements for young child formula and commercial infant foods, and updating Nutrient Reference Values to support labeling and compositional claims
- Informed and empowered consumers: Strengthening the Health Star Rating system, including consideration of mandatory implementation; and exploring digital labeling and e-commerce solutions to improve access to food information
- Thriving food economies: Developing clearer regulatory pathways for nutritive substances and novel foods, and reviewing international alignment to reduce duplication and harmonize standards with trading partners
- Cross-cutting work: Developing an evaluation framework for continuous improvement of standards that may no longer reflect current science or public health priorities.
Some initiatives are already underway, including those related to Health Star Ratings, young child formula, digital labeling, and the evaluation framework.
Updates on FSANZ's current work and priorities can be found on its Work Program Dashboard.
Emphasis on Flexibility and Evidence-Based Regulation
FSANZ said proposals are often complex and can take multiple years to complete due to the need for scientific assessment, regulatory analysis, and stakeholder consultation. The roadmap incorporates flexibility to address emerging risks and unplanned priorities while maintaining a structured, risk-based program of work.
