Portable Device Allows Onsite, Real-Time Detection of Food Allergens, Gluten

Allergen Alert has introduced the first portable device able to detect the presence of allergens or gluten in a meal with laboratory-grade precision. The pocket-sized “mini laboratory” relies on a patented, single-use pouch derived from bioMérieux’s laboratory technologies, which miniaturizes and automates every step of a professional analytical test.
Compact and portable, the device enables people with food allergies or celiac disease to test their food autonomously and on the spot, providing a preventive solution to a major public health challenge.
According to Allergen Alert, in the U.S., 9 percent of the population (33 million people) is food-allergic, and an additional 1 percent of the population live with celiac disease. For these individuals, a mistake in the production of food, a trace amount of an allergen in a meal, or accidental contact with an allergen can bring severe health consequences. Most severe reactions occur outside the home.
Beyond ingredient lists, labels, and conversations with restaurant staff, Allergen Alert provides users with an additional layer of protection powered by qualitative data. Using the new device, anyone can test their own meal in the real world and right before eating, using immunoassay technology that has until now been reserved for professional laboratories.
The lightweight, battery-powered device analyzes a calibrated, representative food sample placed inside a single-use pouch. Within minutes, the result clearly indicates whether an allergen or gluten is present.
bioMérieux researchers developed Allergen Alert’s core miniaturized technology: a sealed, single-use pouch that automates the entire analytical process (i.e., sample preparation, protein extraction, migration, detection, and analysis). This “sample-in, result-out” automation ensures reproducible reliability with minimal human intervention.
The mini lab is being developed in collaboration with allergists, allergy patients, and advocacy groups, as well as experts in food safety and the restaurant industry. By making laboratory-grade detection available onsite in minutes, Allergen Alert offers a new solution for food safety control.

Although Allergen Alert was created to meet the needs of people with allergies, its potential extends beyond individual use to the foodservice industry. The technology has already attracted the attention of restaurants, and Allergen Alert is in advanced discussions with corporate and school catering providers, as well as global event catering services.
Thanks to automated sample preparation, future applications of the technology behind Allergy Alert could also extend beyond allergens, including broader food analysis, water testing, environmental monitoring, and other areas.
Allergen Alert’s mini lab will be available for pre-orders at the end of 2026. In addition to the device, test pouches will be offered at less than $10 each or through a subscription plan.
