FDA to Increase Cantaloupe Inspections

The domestic cantaloupe industry will experience increased food safety inspections and product sampling from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, according to a letter from the agency to the industry released on February 25.

After more than 4 years, a 76-count indictment was filed against four former officials of the Peanut Corporation of America for selling Salmonella-contaminated peanut butter products blamed for a nationwide Salmonella outbreak in 2009 that killed 9 people and sickened more than 700.
