The UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced last week that it has revised and updated its guidance on E. coli O157 control of cross-contamination, taking into account the results from independent research into the effectiveness of disinfecting complex equipment, as well as the views of industry and local authority stakeholders.

As Ongoing Outbreaks Make Headlines, CDC Trumpets Antibiotic Resistance Data

One week after its initial release of data from 2012 showing that antibiotic resistance in foodborne pathogens is an ongoing public health threat, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on July 10 issued a "Special Edition" newsletter promoting its report and touting what federal agencies are doing to improve food safety.

Researchers Find Cloths Transfer Salmonella during Tomato Harvesting

A new study by researchers at the University of Florida confirms that cloths used in harvesting of tomatoes shouldn’t be reused, as they can transfer Salmonella bacteria from one tomato to many others.

Congresswomen DeLauro, Slaughter Call for Shutdown of All Foster Farms Plants

July 7, 2014
Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) today issued a call for all Foster Farms poultry processing facilities to be shuttered until a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened over 600 people in 29 states is stopped. The Representatives also introduced legislation that would strengthen the ability of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to recall meat, poultry, and egg products by clarifying the term "adulterated."

Foster Farms Recalls Chicken as 16-Month Salmonella Outbreak Continues

The USDA and California-based poultry processor Foster Farms announced July 3 that the company is recalling some of the raw chicken products linked to a 16-month-long outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg infections that has sickened more than 600 consumers in 27 states and Puerto Rico.
