ICCO Cheese Company, Inc. issues allergy alert on undeclared walnuts and pecans in Gia Russa whole grain bread crumbs

ICCO Cheese Company, Inc., Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Walnuts and Pecans in Gia Russa Whole Grain Bread Crumbs
May 7, 2019

ICCO Cheese Company, Inc. (ICCO) of Orangeburg, New York, is recalling Gia Russa Unseasoned Whole Grain Bread Crumbs and Gia Russa Italian Seasoned Whole Grain Bread Crumbs with “best by” dates of 08/21/2019, 09/21/2019, 10/04/2019, 11/09/2019, 11/12/2019, 12/05/2019 because they may contain undeclared walnuts and pecans. People who have a tree nut allergy or severe sensitivity, do not consume the recalled product as it may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction.

Gia Russa Unseasoned Whole Grain Bread Crumbs UPC 0-26825-01853-2 and Gia Russa Italian Seasoned Whole Grain Bread Crumbs UPC 0-26825-01854-9 were distributed nationwide through retail stores.

Cans of the affected product are labeled with the product names “Gia Russa Whole Grain Bread Crumbs Unseasoned” or “Gia Russa Whole Grain Bread Crumbs Italian Seasoned” with a net weight of 10 oz. The affected products are labeled “Best by” 08/21/2019, 09/21/2019, 10/04/2019, 11/09/2019, 11/12/2019, 12/05/2019. The date code can be found on the bottom of the can.

This recall was triggered by a consumer complaint. ICCO informed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and launched an internal investigation. The presence of walnuts and pecans was discovered in the product through third-party laboratory testing. The source of the tree nut allergen is believed to be the bread used by a supplier of the bread crumbs used by ICCO to repack the product. ICCO is fully cooperating with the FDA’s ongoing investigation. There has been one reported allergic reaction to date, associated with the consumption of the Whole Grain Bread Crumbs.

Check to see if you have recalled product in your home. Consumers who have purchased impacted lots of Gia Russa Whole Grain Bread Crumbs are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Gia Russa Consumer Relations at 1-888-794-3426, Mon – Fri 9am – 4pm Eastern Time. For more information, please visit GiaRussaRecall.com
