Hygiena Introduces First PCR Assay for Virulence-Associated Characterization of Salmonella

Hygiena has launched the BAX System Real-Time PCR Assay for Highly Pathogenic Salmonella, which was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center within the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS). The assay is designed to provide virulence-associated genetic characterization of Salmonella-positive samples for research and ecological surveillance applications in poultry, pork, and beef.
According to Hygiena, the assay detects Salmonella spp. while targeting up to three proprietary genetic markers associated with pathogenicity. The company said the additional genetic information is intended to support surveillance and research into risk-based approaches to Salmonella control.
Food safety research has increasingly examined not only the presence of Salmonella, but also characteristics of Salmonella populations that may be relevant to public health risk. The new assay adds detection of virulence-associated genetic markers to the PCR workflow.
The assay is designed as a reflex test following a positive BAX System Real-Time Salmonella result. It uses the same lysate from the initial positive sample to target Salmonella spp. alongside three proprietary virulence-associated genetic markers, eliminating the need to begin a separate sample-preparation process.
