FDA Withdraws Authorizations for Two Obsolete Food Dye Uses

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a final order and a proposal revoking the color additive listings for specific uses of two food dyes.
The final order repeals the color additive regulation that allows for the use of Orange B for coloring the casings or surfaces of frankfurters and sausages.
The proposal would repeal the color additive regulation that allows for the use of Citrus Red No. 2 for coloring the skins of mature oranges.
FDA has determined that the authorized uses of Orange B and Citrus Red No. 2 have both been abandoned by industry, rendering the authorizations “outdated and unnecessary.”
