Singapore Food Agency Publishes List of Approved Novel Foods

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has published a document that lists novel foods that the agency has approved for import and sale in the country.
The list includes:
- Green and red algae biomass
- Cultured chicken
- Cultivated chicken biomass
- Mycelial/mycelium biomasses
- Mycoprotein produced via biomass fermentation
- Bacteria-derived protein powder
- Fungal biomass known as “fermotein”
- Cultured Japanese quail
- Urolithin A (a gut metabolite) derived from chemical synthesis
- Sodium salts produced using precision fermentation of genetically modified (GM) Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) JBT-3SL.
The full list, including specifications and descriptions for the novel foods, as well as risk management measures based on Critical Control Points, can be accessed here.
The earliest date on which any of the novel foods were approved was May 2019.
In April 2025, SFA updated its guidance document for industry on the requirements for the safety assessment of novel foods and novel food ingredients.
