FDA Passes Oversight Responsibilities for Siluriformes Fish to FSIS

FDA and USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) have established a Memorandum of Understanding to help transfer primary regulatory oversight over Siluriformes fish and fish products — including commercial catfish, basa, pangasius, and swai/tra — from FDA to FSIS.

UK Scientists Find Glucose Fuels Salmonella's Attack on Human Gut

May 8, 2014
UK researchers studying Salmonella Typhimurium have found that the bacteria strain uses glucose as its energy source when it invades the epithelial cells that line the human gut. They also learned that disrupting a key enzyme during glycolysis severely reduced S. Typhimurium's ability to reproduce in epithelial cells.

FDA Issues Fourth Annual Reportable Food Registry

May 5, 2014
The FDA today made available the 4th Annual Reportable Food Registry (RFR) Report, which summarizes the Registry’s fourth year of operation (Sept. 8, 2012 – Sept. 7, 2013). The report found that the RFR logged in 1269 reports, underscoring RFR's importance in tracking patterns of food adulteration and helping to remove dangerous products from the marketplace.

In an effort to shore up the authenticity of Australian exports to China, former Boomers basketball player Andrew Vlahov and his business partner Grant Shaw have teamed up with Chinese IT company Invengo and consultants Deloitte to develop an app that detects authentic labels on wine and other goods.

FSIS, APHIS Agree to Partner on Foodborne Illness Investigations

Two agencies under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) umbrella, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), announced May 2 that they have signed an agreement to . provide a more comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to address foodborne health hazards potentially associated with meat and poultry products.
