Wales Begins Developing National Food Strategy

The Welsh Government has announced plans to develop a National Food Strategy for Wales, introducing a whole-system approach to food policy that will span the supply chain from production through consumption.
The announcement was made on July 21 by the Cabinet Minister for Rural Resilience and Sustainability at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show. The strategy will integrate policies related to food production, processing, retail, public procurement, health, education, and the circular economy.
Simon Wright, owner of Wright's Food Emporium in Llanarthne and a food systems expert with more than 30 years of experience in the Welsh hospitality sector, has been appointed to chair an Expert Working Group that will guide development of the strategy. Wright will lead engagement with food producers, businesses, and communities across Wales.
According to the Welsh Government, the country's food and beverage supply chain is valued at more than £28 billion and employs approximately one in six workers. The strategy will evaluate existing food policies, identify gaps, and recommend ways to better support producers, strengthen the Welsh food economy, and promote food literacy and healthy eating.
The Expert Working Group will provide recommendations on key challenges and opportunities facing the Welsh food system, advise on measures of success, and support long-term collaboration between the Welsh Government, public sector organizations, and the food and beverage industry. The final National Food Strategy is expected to be presented to ministers in 2027.
Susan Jebb, Ph.D., Chair of the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA), commented on the announcement. “FSA welcomes the announcement of a National Food Strategy for Wales, and we are pleased that someone with Simon Wright’s extensive experience in food will be leading this work,” she said. “Safe and trusted food underpins a strong food system, and we look forward to working with Simon, the Welsh Government, and partners to support a joined-up approach that benefits the public, communities, and food businesses across Wales.”
