Penn State Extension to Hold FSMA Training Series for Pennsylvania Growers in 2027

Penn State Extension will offer a series of in-person and virtual training sessions for Pennsylvania fruit and vegetable growers on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (PSR), Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), and the co-management of natural resources and food safety.
The “Food Safety Modernization Act: Produce Grower Certification Training” will cover key requirements of the FSMA PSR and best practices for produce safety. Participants will also have opportunities to ask questions, discuss their experiences, and address produce safety concerns.
FSMA Produce Safety Training Dates and Locations
In-person training sessions will be held at the following locations:
Martinsburg: January 12, 2027, 8:30 A.M.–4:30 P.M., Morrisons Cove Memorial Park, 201 S. Walnut Street
West Chester: January 20, 2027, 8:30 A.M.–4:30 P.M., Government Services Building, 601 Westtown Road, Room 370
Lancaster: February 24, 2027, 8:15 A.M.–4:30 P.M., Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road
Mercer: March 3, 2027, 8 A.M.–5 P.M., Penn State Extension’s Mercer County office, 436 N. Perry Highway
Gettysburg: March 16, 2027, 8:30 A.M.–4:30 P.M., Penn State Extension’s Adams County office, 670 Old Harrisburg Pike
Newtown: March 30, 2027, 8:30 A.M.–4:30 P.M., Penn State Extension’s Bucks County office, 576 Penns Park Road.
Live virtual training will also be offered from 10 A.M.–3 P.M. on November 10–11 and April 6–7, 2027.
Participants who complete the full course will be eligible to receive a certificate from the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) verifying completion of the training. Participants must attend the entire training and submit the required paperwork to the trainer at the conclusion of the course to receive a certificate.
According to Penn State Extension, the training is required for commercial growers who grow more than $35,000 of produce on average.
Preregistration is required, and registration deadlines vary by session. Both in-person and virtual training options cost $50. A Spanish-language version of the training is also available.
