Kathleen Glass, Ph.D., will receive Food Safety Magazine's Distinguished Service Award for 2024. The award will be presented at the 2024 Food Safety Summit, taking place May 6–9 in Rosemont, Illinois. 

In an October 19 invite-only media roundtable and written statement, James (Jim) Jones, the first Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), revealed his priorities for forging a new, unified Human Foods Program. Significantly, amid the wave of state legislators aiming to ban possibly harmful food additives, Jones stated his intent to more closely address the issue, beginning with brominated vegetable oil. 

The Food Date Labeling Act, a bipartisan, bicameral bill, has been reintroduced in Congress to standardize and clarify food date labels to prevent food from being wasted. 

On December 23, 2022, the Senate voted to confirm Dr. Jose Emilio Esteban as the USDA's Under Secretary for Food Safety. The action came on the last day before the 177th Congress expired.

A recent study evaluated four commercial disinfectants that are listed by EPA as being "active" against human norovirus. The study found that three of the disinfectants did not work well against the virus. The fourth, however, was found to be very effective at killing norovirus.

The National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) hosted a webinar on food safety legislation and policy trends on September 13, as part of its resource offerings for National Food Safety Education Month.
