Watchdog Group Blasts EFSA for Experts' Conflicts of Interest

Jerky Treats Linked to Thousands of Pet Illnesses; FDA Solicits Consumer Input

A mysterious jerky treat-related illness that has killed more than 500 dogs and cats and sickened thousands more has prompted to U.S. Food and Drug Administration to request the help of pet owners. On Tuesday, the FDA asked pet owners and veterinarians to contact them if their dog or cat has become ill after eating jerky pet treats — packaged snacks made of chicken, duck, sweet potatoes or dried fruit.

SDSU Opens Center for Agribusiness and Food Systems Management

October 21, 2013
South Dakota State University (SDSU) last Thursday announced the launch of its new Center for Agribusiness and Food Systems Management. An SDSU news release said the center will focus on nutrition, food safety, food processing and business management, and will draw on collaborative, interdisciplinary and intercollegiate partnerships to provide guidance and solutions to challenges facing the food and agriculture industries throughout the Northern Great Plains.

FSIS Posts FAQ Page about Foster Farms' Salmonella Outbreak

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on Oct. 16 issued a notice that it had posted on its website a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page regarding the recent Salmonella outbreak that has been traced to raw chicken products from three Foster Farms processing plants in California.

Foster Farms, FSIS Reach Agreement to Keep California Plants Open

October 11, 2013
Late yesterday (Oct. 10), beleaguered poultry processor Foster Farms announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reviewed the company's safety plan for its three California facilities in Livingston and Fresno, and had agreed to allow the plants to continue operating. This follows Foster Farms' implementation of several new food safety controls over the last two months and the company's commitment to install added processes during an enhanced inspection period over the next 90 days, according to a company statement.
