The number of Salmonella illnesses associated with a recent recall of nearly 7 million pounds of raw ground beef has doubled, according to new data released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The number of reported cases has jumped from 57 to now 120, according to CDC’s October 23rd update. The number of states affected has gone from 16 to 22. There have been 33 hospitalizations and no deaths have been reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from August 5, 2018 to September 28, 2018.

Epidemiologic and traceback evidence indicates that ground beef produced by JBS Tolleson, Inc. in Arizona is a likely source of this outbreak. On October 4, 2018, the JBS meat facility in Tolleson recalled 6.5 million pounds of its raw ground beef products due to possible Salmonella Newport contamination. The products were produced and packaged from July 26, 2018, to September 7, 2018 and were shipped to retailers nationwide under many brand names. Products are labeled with the establishment number “EST. 267.” This is usually found inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service has posted a list of all the stores and states where the recalled ground beef was sold. It may continue to be updated as more information becomes available.
