February 28, 2018

The number of pet food recalls has continued to increase in the U.S. Officials are on heightened alert because contaminated pet food jeopardizes the health of not only pets, but the humans who care for them as well. The latest recalls include the following:

TruPet, LLC (based in Milford, OH)

  • Announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on February 23
  • Recalled product: Treat Me Crunchy Beef Delight, 2.5 oz. pet treats; Affected Lot # 20190514 13753
  • Potentially contaminated with Salmonella; Positive test sample discovered by Michigan Department of Agriculture
  • Distributed in the continental U.S. online via Chewy.com and TruDog.com
  • No reports of illness related to this recall

Northwest Naturals (based in Portland, OR)

  • Announced on February 23, updated on February 27
  • 5 lb. frozen chicken and salmon pet food chubs; UPC code of 0 87316 38440 6; Best by date is 15 082218
  • Potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes; Collected sample purchased at a Michigan specialty pet store tested negative for Escherichia coli and Salmonella
  • Sold via specialty pet retailers; Distributed to California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington
  • No reports of illness related to this recall

Carnivore Meat Company (based in Green Bay, WI)

  • Announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on February 24
  • Recalled product: 73 cases of Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Beef Nibblets Entree for Dogs; Affected Lot #13753
  • Potentially contaminated with Salmonella; Positive test sample discovered by Michigan Department of Agriculture
  • Distributed to both independent and online retailers (including Chewy and Amazon) throughout the continental U.S.
  • No reports of illness related to this recall

Consumers are strongly encouraged to check their pet food products—including lot numbers, UPC codes and expiration dates to confirm whether or not they are in possession of these and other recalled products. Each company that has issued a recall can be contacted directly for questions regarding the safety of their products.
