Sparrow Bio Announces Personal PCR Tech for At-Home Pathogen Testing

Sparrow Bio has invented a personal device that could enable at-home polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for foodborne pathogens like Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella.
Traditionally, PCR testing has relied on complex, expensive laboratory-based instruments. Sparrow Bio's personal PCR analyzer, which the company aims to offer for $100, is designed to enable DNA testing outside of laboratory settings.
The four-inch-tall analyzer integrates DNA collection, extraction, thermal cycling, real-time optical detection, and automated analysis. Using disposable test cartridges, the device can produce results within 30–60 minutes, depending on the test, and displays results on a built-in screen.
According to Sparrow Bio, the company has developed technologies that could reduce manufacturing costs by up to 50 times compared to existing laboratory-based PCR instruments. The company estimated manufacturing costs for its analyzer to range between $135 and less than $100 per unit at high production volumes, with disposable test cartridges costing approximately $7–$2 depending on production volume.
Paul Lem, M.D., CEO of Sparrow Bio, said the company's goal is to make DNA testing more widely accessible by moving PCR technology beyond traditional laboratory environments.
The company is seeking strategic partners to fund further development and help gain regulatory clearances for consumer testing products using its platform.
