Multistate Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Peanut, Almond Butters
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) yesterday reported that it is collaborating with public health officials in several states and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup infections linked to almond and peanut butters manufactured by nSpired Natural Foods.
As of Aug. 20, a total of four persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Braenderup have been reported from four states since January 1, 2014. One ill person has been identified in each of four states: Connecticut, Iowa, Tennessee, and Texas. Of those four, one person has been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.
The FDA isolated the same strain of Salmonella Braenderup from environmental samples collected from an nSpired Natural Foods facility during routine inspections in January and July 2014. On August 19, nSpired Natural Foods, Inc. voluntarily recalled certain lots of almond and peanut butters because of potential contamination with Salmonella. The recalled brands include Arrowhead Mills, MaraNatha, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Safeway, and Kroger.
