Mettler Toledo Product Inspection Group has introduced its M50 R-Series AdvancedLine metal detectors to the North American market. The systems are designed for food manufacturers requiring metal detection capabilities alongside traceability, data connectivity, and production line monitoring.

According to Mettler Toledo, the M50 R-Series includes technologies intended to improve metal detection sensitivity across different food applications. The systems feature eDrive PLUS technology, which can be combined with a 900-kilohertz (kHz) frequency to increase field strength and sensitivity for detecting small, wire-shaped, and non-spherical metal contaminants.

The series also incorporates the company’s 3S PLUS algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI)-based machine learning, which Mettler Toledo said are intended to improve detection sensitivity while reducing false rejects.

The M50 R-Series includes three models:

  • M55R: Designed to detect irregularly shaped metal contaminants in dry products, including pasta, savory snacks, and deep-frozen products where thawing does not occur.
  • M55RB: Designed for bulk products such as large sacks, bags of powder, and cartons. The model incorporates radio frequency interference (RFI) shielding to filter external interference in large-aperture applications, as well as coil geometry intended to provide consistent detection performance.
  • M56R: Designed for chilled, wet, dry, deep-frozen or thawing, and metalized film-wrapped products. The model uses multiple simultaneous frequencies, the 3S PLUS algorithm, and AI-based machine learning to reduce product signal and improve sensitivity for wet or conductive products. It also incorporates a 900-kHz tuned frequency for dry products.

The M50 R-Series features a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen designed to simplify system setup and operation. According to Mettler Toledo, the interface can respond when operators are wearing gloves or when the screen is wet.

The series also incorporates the INFINITY Electronic Test System for automated production performance monitoring. Mettler Toledo said the system can conduct routine tests automatically without operator intervention and can complete testing up to three times faster than manual methods.

Embedded Wi-Fi provides access to system information through QR code functionality. The systems also include condition monitoring capabilities and data-transfer features intended to support continuous operation and reduce production disruptions.

For access control, the M50 R-Series incorporates radio-frequency identification (RFID), enabling individual user logins and access management. Access records can be stored locally or transferred using communication protocols including OPC-UA and EtherNet/IP.
