CARBIOS Active Added to FDA Inventory of Food Contact Substances

By Food Safety Magazine Editorial Team

March 5, 2024

CARBIOS Active, an enzymatic solution for 100 percent compostable polylactic acid (PLA) packaging, has been added to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Inventory of Effective Food Contact Substances (FCS), with the Assigned Food Contact Notification (FCN) 2325. PLA packaging integrating CARBIOS Active is 100 percent compostable even at ambient temperatures.

Achieving FDA’s FCS enables the use of CARBIOS Active for packaging materials that are sold in the U.S. and come into contact with food, including rigid and flexible packaging.

Integrated directly into plastic conversion processes, CARBIOS Active enables the creation of a new generation of PLA that is 100 percent compostable, without leaving toxic residues or microplastics. PLA including this enzymatic solution is certified for industrial and home composting.

CARBIOS Active was also recently certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), North America’s leading authority on compostable products and packaging.
