Over 200 Million Eggs Recalled After East Coast Salmonella Outbreak
Nearly 207 million eggs have been recalled by Rose Acre Farms due to possible Salmonella braenderup contamination. The eggs are sold under a number of brand names including Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms, and Sunshine Farms. Recalled eggs were also sold to restaurants.
Health officials were able to pinpoint Rose Acre Farms as the source of an outbreak that sickened 23 people in 9 states, specifically the company’s Hyde County, NC location. All of the ill consumers reported eating eggs or meals that contained eggs, which helped officials narrow down the outbreak source. Six people were hospitalized. To date, no deaths have been reported in association with this outbreak.
Rose Acre Farms produces 2.3 million eggs each day by way of 3 million hens. The company’s eggs are distributed to retailers and restaurants in the Carolinas, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The farm has a USDA inspector on-site daily, according to the official voluntary recall notice.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to eat recalled eggs produced by Rose Acre Farms’ Hyde County farm. The affected Rose Acre Farms recalled eggs are identified with plant number P-1065 and Julian date ranges of 011 through date of 102 printed on either the side portion or the principal side of the carton or package. Consumers who have any of these shell eggs in their homes should not eat them and should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for credit or refund.
