Steven Gendel is an internationally recognized expert in food allergen safety and regulation. He spent more than two decades advancing science and policy at the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (now the Human Foods Program), where he was the first FDA Food Allergen Coordinator. He contributed to agency policies, guidance documents, and regulations and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Gendel is now an independent consultant who protects consumers and supports industry by teaching, advising, and writing about how to understand and improve food allergen labeling and enhance transparency.
Dr. Gendel holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology. He has advanced training in risk assessment, food law, HACCP, and Preventive Controls.
He works from the Washington, D.C., area.
